Woman’s Basketball Championships 2026
🏀🏀 Women’s Basketball amazing achievement as PSUK Basketball Championships in Glasgow!!
The force women’s basketball team competed in the PSUK Basketball Championships in Glasgow last weekend against the best police teams in the UK. The team, led by our GB national players @Kerry Melville 8850 and @Abigail Shields 3354 got off to a strong start in their first game against last year’s champions South Yorkshire beating them 56 to 54. In the next game they defeated Wiltshire 55-39 and a further win against West Midlands 51 to 20 saw them qualify top of their group, progressing to the semi-finals.
In the semi-final, Northumbria defeated Police Scotland West 71-37. This was a great win, as this was the team that put them out of last year’s tournament.
The final game was a hard-fought match against South Yorkshire, which ended up being tied at the end of play and went to overtime, where Northumbria narrowly missed out on the gold.
Northumbria have now been to the finals twice in three years which is a great achievement. Captain @Kerry Melville 8850 who was selected to the tournaments MVP starting five said “I am disappointed that our unbeaten run had to end in the finals and we could not get the gold. However, we left everything out on that court, but it just wasn’t our time. I am proud of the team for their efforts, and we will return stronger from this for 2027”
The team had and the addition two new player @Gerda Morkunaite 9934 and @Samantha Brierley 9123 who both put in great performances.
@Gerda Morkunaite 9934’s sharp shooting and great guard play saw her selected by the Police GB coach to attend GB training with a view to joining the national squad. This is an amazing achievement.
The team is always on the lookout for new players. If you are police staff or a police officer, you would be eligible to play regardless of your level of service.
